New York.- After having an unbalance first half of the season, the “Amazings” have been able to live up to their nickname.
Having a 15-2 best record in baseball after the All Star break that was recently topped with a 6-1 homestand. The Mets are a game out of the National League Wildcard spot and eight games behind in the Nacional East division raise behind the first place Atlanta Braves as they set to face them with a series starting Tuesday at SunTrust Park.
The New York Mets have somehow managed to turn their season around and nobody is happier about it than the Skip himself, Mickey Callaway, who thinks that the team is finally coming together in order to finally accomplish the goal that has been set since the beginning of the season.
“I’m really proud of them, they come to work everyday to win games, we finally started doing what we set out to do, we put ourselves in a good spot to get into the playoffs and we got to keep it going. So they’ve done a fantastic job.”
Heading into Sunday the Mets owned the third best ERA in the second half for their bullpen, (3.20), but there is so much work to do, even though they have been able to somehow managed the damage done on the first half.
The offensive has been incredibly good to turning every game into a battle no matter if they fall behind, coming back for the Mets seems like a very likely thing as of late. OF Michael Conforto who didn’t start the season on very good terms offensively has been remarkably better at the place since the mid summer break batting .308, 9 homers and 22 RBIs and had the go-ahead hit to walk off the Nationals Friday night.
Callaway remarked that there is some elements of the game that they need to put into practice, he used the term “small ball” to refer to some of the key aspects of the game that are often overlooked but that at the end of the game are essential to have a successful streak like the one they are currently having.
“We got to play small ball, we have to make sure that when we need a bunt down, we get the bunt down, we have to throw strikes and make sure that we put the pressure on them, they have a really good pitcher going today and so do we in Syndergaard and it should be a good battle.”
The manager is happy to see that his new SP Marcus Stroman was able to have an incredible home debut last Friday, with electric personality the righthy was able to amup fans creating a playoff atmosfire from the first time he stepped into the play to Conforto’s walkoff hit.
“Stroman was fantastic and he really fed off the energy in the ballpark, from the fans and you are right, it was a playoff atmosphere and hopefully we’ll play many more games like that.”
There is nothing left for the Mets to do than keep on working and playing ball hard, since it seems like there is nothing that can stop them right now which has the players in a trusting mode, believing that if they aren’t able to get something done the next man up will.
